Successful cover letter writing for programmers

Are you a programmer seeking expert guidance to secure your next programming job role? Look no further than cvapp.nz! Our platform is committed to assisting you in maximising your professional potential and helping you achieve your career goals. At cvapp.nz, we understand the unique challenges programmers face in the competitive job market. That's why we’ve created a comprehensive cover letter guide to help kickstart your career potential. Let’s begin!

Cover letter header

As a programmer, it is important to ensure that your cover letter header clearly displays your contact details. This includes providing your email address and phone number, making it easy for potential employers to reach out to you. In addition to your contact details, you can also include links to your professional networking sites or online portfolio platforms. These platforms serve as a showcase for your work and provide concrete evidence of your programming skills and experience. If you have a LinkedIn profile, GitHub repository, or personal website, be sure to include the correct URLs in your cover letter header.

Including these links can be highly advantageous as it allows prospective employers to easily access your work samples, projects, and any contributions you have made to the programming community. It provides a deeper understanding of your abilities and allows hiring managers to assess the quality and scope of your work. When including these links, ensure that they are easily accessible and that they reflect positively on your professionalism. You'll want to take the opportunity to showcase your skills by including projects that highlight your programming expertise and achievements that align with the requirements of the position you are applying for.

Cover letter greeting

Your cover letter greeting should be appropriate and professional. When addressing the hiring manager or team responsible for reviewing your application, consider using a formal greeting such as "Dear Mr. Ranginui," or "Dear Team CompanyLab."  Starting your cover letter with a polite and respectful greeting sets the tone for your cover letter and demonstrates your professionalism. This simple gesture shows that you have taken the time to personalise your application and address it directly to the intended recipient. Remember, a well-crafted cover letter can make a significant impact when trying to make a positive first impression.

Cover letter introduction

In the introduction of your cover letter, it is important to provide a concise overview of your career background as a programmer. This introduction serves as a springboard for your body paragraphs, enabling you to elaborate into more specific details about your programming skills, achievements, and experiences.

To effectively introduce yourself as a programmer, you can begin by briefly summarising your relevant professional experience, highlighting any positions, projects, or companies you have worked with. Additionally, consider mentioning your educational background and any certifications or specialised training you have completed. It's also beneficial to emphasise your passion for programming and your commitment to staying up-to-date with industry trends and advancements. This demonstrates your enthusiasm for the field and showcases your dedication to continuous growth and improvement.

Remember, the introduction of your cover letter should be engaging and create a strong first impression. By providing an overview of your programming background and demonstrating your enthusiasm for the field, you lay the groundwork for the subsequent body paragraphs, where you can delve deeper into the specific aspects of your expertise and showcase your suitability for the desired role.

Cover letter body paragraphs

Your cover letter body paragraphs provide an opportunity for you to elaborate on your career achievements, skills, and experiences in order to showcase why you are the perfect candidate for the programming role.

In these paragraphs, you can expand upon specific examples and projects that highlight your programming expertise. Discuss any innovative solutions you have developed, successful collaborations you have been a part of, or any measurable results you have achieved. Be sure to provide specific details and metrics whenever possible, as they help quantify your accomplishments and make a stronger impact.

Furthermore, emphasise the transferable skills you possess that make you an excellent fit for the programming role. Communication skills, problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and adaptability are just a few examples of skills that are highly valued in the programming field. Highlight how these skills have contributed to your success in previous roles and how they can benefit the organisation you are applying to.

In addition to your achievements and skills, make sure to showcase your passion for programming. You can discuss any personal projects, contributions to the open-source community, or participation in coding competitions that demonstrate your commitment and enthusiasm for the field. By showcasing your proactive engagement and ongoing learning, you present yourself as a continuous learner and someone who stays ahead of industry trends.

Throughout your body paragraphs, keep the focus on how your experiences and skills align with the requirements of the programming role you are applying for. Tailor your examples and achievements to showcase how you can contribute to the specific needs and objectives of the organisation. By explicitly connecting your experiences and skills to the requirements of the role, you make a compelling case for why you are the perfect candidate.

Adaptable middle part example

I have attached my creative portfolio for your convenience. Throughout my creative career, I have had many moments where I have experienced a deeper flow state, a deeper sense of belonging, by using my creative talents to help others. In 2017, I was invited to attend a programming camp in San Francisco where I gained insights and skills from some of the leading web developers in the United States, Canada and Europe. I also had the unique privilege of being mentored by Gary Silverman, CEO of Antioq.

I received a Bachelor of Communication from Victoria University of Wellington in 2015. In addition to this, I am fully proficient in JavaScript, C#, Python, Swift, Java and Go. I have been programming since I was eight years old, and although I am able to confidently code in all of these programming languages, my favourite coding language is Java. All of my most favourite projects, including "Koby Goes Home" have been completed in Java. You can find the "Koby Goes Home" project in my portfolio under the "apps" section.

In my previous positions, I served companies such as MATCH and CrossOne as a full-stack developer. Being a web developer, I amassed strong organisational and time management skills. In total, I have completed over 100,000 lines of code over the last ten years. Sometimes I joke with my friends and family that I can 'speak' code just as fluently as I can speak English!

Cover letter conclusion

To conclude your cover letter, it’s important to end with a strong call-to-action statement.

In your call-to-action statement, express your enthusiasm for the opportunity to discuss your qualifications further and emphasise your interest in moving forward in the hiring process. Encourage the recipient to reach out to you for an interview or to discuss your application in more detail. By displaying enthusiasm and a proactive approach, you demonstrate your eagerness to contribute to the organisation and your commitment to the role.

Additionally, it's beneficial to express gratitude for the time and consideration given to your application. Thank the reader for reviewing your cover letter and considering your candidacy. This small gesture shows professionalism and appreciation for the opportunity to be considered.

Finally, conclude your cover letter with an appropriate farewell, such as "best wishes" or "ngā mihi." Choose a closing that aligns with the tone and formality of your cover letter while also reflecting your personality and cultural background. The appropriate farewell allows you to maintain a professional tone while leaving a positive and lasting impression.

Adaptable conclusion example

I would love to share more details with you about my programming career, my portfolio and past projects. I am so incredibly passionate about the digital world and creative agency, and I would love to share this passion and my skills with the Quark team. I hope to hear from you soon!

Best wishes,

Logan Davies
