Writing a Successful Marketing CV
If you’re looking to boost your career in marketing, you’ve come to the right place! At cvapp.nz, we’ve helped countless professionals land their dream job roles. We’ll help walk you through the process, but in general, all CVs should contain the following:
- CV header
- Personal statement
- An employment history section
- A CV skills section
- An education section
We’ve got a range of templates and resources to help you boost your career potential. Let’s get started!
Personal Statements: Making your mark on the world
First up on the agenda: personal statements. Personal statements serve as an opportunity for potential employers to gain more insight into who you are professionally. Alongside your header, your personal statement is also often the first section of your CV that attracts employers to read more about you when evaluating your suitability for a role. Think of it as a short and snappy summary of your professional background: in ideally four to six sentences, you'll want to highlight any important accomplishments or qualifications relevant to the position. Use descriptive, actionable language and be sure to include keywords from the job description where possible. Ensuring that there are no errors or typos is essential, and with our cvapp.nz spell-checker, we'll make sure your CV is good to go!

Employment History: a snapshot of your career trajectory
This section is for including past positions of employment. Have you completed any impressive marketing projects in your career? Include them here! If you haven’t had much work experience yet, there's no need to worry. There are several strategies you can employ to effectively showcase your skills, experience, and enthusiasm for future employment.
One approach is to emphasise your existing skill set by highlighting relevant experiences from any volunteer or extracurricular activities you have participated in. This will show potential employers that you have developed unique and valuable abilities, even without traditional job experience. Another effective tactic is to mention in your cover letter that you are at the beginning stages of your career and are eager to gain more experience and knowledge through your work. This demonstrates your willingness to learn and grow rapidly, which is a trait that is often highly sought-after by employers. By maximising the value of your current experiences and positioning yourself as a motivated and dedicated learner, you can enhance your chances of securing the job opportunity.
If you are further along in your marketing career, you can go ahead and list your previous employment roles in reverse chronological order, emphasising your most recent jobs first. Each bullet point should be developed as if you were promoting a product. Begin with a powerful action word and then provide specific details, numerical data, and statistics that enhance the significance of your achievements. It's important to tailor your employment history to align with the requirements of the job you're applying for. Focus on highlighting the skills and abilities that your prospective employer is seeking. If you can demonstrate that you are already performing the tasks and responsibilities listed in the job description, it will further strengthen your candidacy. In your employment history section, it’s important to include details about your previous job titles, your previous employers, and any achievements or responsibilities you possessed in your role. Here’s a great example:

You may want to prioritise exceptional grades or projects that highlight your strong work ethic, dedication, and ability to excel -- especially those relevant to the marketing industry.
It can also be beneficial to highlight any extracurricular activities or honours you earned through academic clubs or associations that are relevant to your field of study. If you have any links to any marketing projects you've completed, you can include them here or a link to any portfolio websites in the header of your CV.
