Dear Mr. Smith,

After managing customer relationships, client negotiations and fiscal objectives for several large New Zealand companies over fifteen years, I am excited to apply for the role of COO with Expand & Explore. As a business executive with over a decade of experience, I respect Expand & Explore's commitment to excellent customer service and innovative, efficient business strategy.

My executive experience is extensive. I have been the managing director of one of New Zealand's most successful start-ups and have assisted with business strategy and growth for more than 100 high-profile national and international clients. Throughout my career, I have led teams ranging from small departments to large, multi-national organisations, and delivering strong financial results. I am proficient in all aspects of business management, from strategic planning and financial analysis to operations management and marketing strategy.

In addition to my executive experience, I was also educated at The University of Auckland, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) in 2005. I completed my postgraduate degree at The University of Melbourne in Australia, where I graduated with a Master of Management in 2008.

Some of my most impactful career achievements include:

  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive business strategy that propelled a previous company from a valuation of $145,000,000 NZD to $1,000,000,000 NZD in just four years. This involved a strategic restructuring of operations, a targeted marketing campaign, and the development of key strategic partnerships.
  • Successfully expanding businesses into international markets, including Australia, Indonesia, Turkey, China, France, and the United Kingdom. This required in-depth market research, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to adapt business strategies to diverse environments.
  • Establishing strong partnerships in both national and international markets, creating a solid foundation for sustainable growth and expansion. This involved building relationships with key stakeholders, negotiating favourable agreements, and fostering a collaborative approach to business development.

I am currently seeking a new challenge where I can leverage my leadership skills and experience to drive growth and innovation. I am confident that I would be a good fit for your company and that I have the skills and experience necessary to be successful in this role. I am a fast learner, eager to embrace new challenges, and always willing to go the extra mile to achieve outstanding results.

I am confident that my leadership skills, strategic thinking, and proven ability to drive results make me an ideal candidate for the Chief Executive Officer position at Expand & Explore.

I would love to discuss the details of my tenure with you in more detail and discover how to take Expand & Explore's business potential to the next level.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Mr. Johnson,

As the former COO at Rāwhiti Solutions, I’m thrilled to apply for the role of Chief Operating Officer position at Celebrate Media. I’m focused on building high-performing teams that consistently exceed expectations. In my previous role as COO, I inherited a disengaged sales team with declining revenue. Within two years, I transformed that team into a top-performing unit, increasing sales by 25% and exceeding targets by 12%. My leadership philosophy is simple: empower individuals, foster collaboration, and drive results. I'm confident I can bring that same energy and success to Celebrate Media.

Executive cover letter body

The body of your cover letter is where you showcase your executive prowess and demonstrate your strategic vision. Include the following:

  • Highlight key accomplishments and focus on your most significant achievements, using metrics and data to showcase your impact
  • Demonstrate strategic thinking and share examples of how you've identified opportunities, developed innovative solutions, and led successful initiatives
  • Showcase your leadership style, briefly describing your leadership philosophy and how you empower teams to achieve goals
  • Discuss how your values align with company culture

First body paragraph: your suitability for the role (skills & experience)

To help leave a strong first impression on employers, be sure to highlight these key areas in your opening paragraph:

  1. Leadership experience: Discuss your experience leading teams and organisations, highlighting specific roles, responsibilities, and accomplishments. Mention any relevant executive leadership programs or certifications you've completed from institutions like The NZIM Leadership Academy or The Institute of Directors New Zealand.
  2. Strategic thinking and execution: Elaborate on your ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives that drive growth, innovation, or organisational change. Provide specific examples of successful projects or initiatives you've led.
  3. Business acumen and financial performance: Demonstrate your understanding of business principles and financial performance metrics. Highlight your experience in managing budgets, optimising resources, and driving profitability.
  4. Problem-solving and decision-making: Provide examples of how you've effectively identified and resolved complex business challenges, demonstrating your ability to analyse situations, navigate challenges, and make sound decisions.
  5. Communication and stakeholder management: Highlight your ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including boards, investors, employees, and customers.

By strategically showcasing these leadership qualities and tailoring them to the specific requirements of the executive role, you'll create a powerful opening paragraph that commands attention and demonstrates your value.

Professional tip

Use your executive cover letter to tell a compelling story about your career journey and how your experiences have prepared you for this specific role. Include keywords from the job description to demonstrate your alignment with their needs to help bypass the ATS

Remember, you're not just listing accomplishments; you're showcasing your vision, strategic thinking, and ability to drive results.

Second body paragraph(s): alignment with the organisation

In your second body paragraph, demonstrate your understanding of the organisation’s strategic direction and how your expertise can contribute to their success.

Go beyond simply researching their website – analyse their annual reports, explore industry publications, and stay informed about their recent initiatives and challenges.

For example, Fonterra focuses on the following values:

  • Practicing kaitiakitanga and taking care of the environment
  • Working together collaboratively
  • Becoming better every day
  • Maximising performance

If you were applying for a role at a company like Fonterra, you could discuss your experience with maximising performance and working collaboratively.

You could also highlight your experience in leading sustainability initiatives or your expertise in international business development.

By connecting your skills and experience to the organisation’s strategic priorities and demonstrating your understanding of the challenges and opportunities they face, you'll position yourself as a valuable asset and a strategic thinker who can contribute to their future success.
