Formatting your pharmacist cover letter

Generally speaking, cover letters are structured using the following elements;

  • Cover letter header
  • Cover letter greeting
  • Cover letter introduction
  • Cover letter body paragraphs
  • Cover letter conclusion

Before you begin writing your cover letter, it's important to thoroughly review the job description for the pharmacist position you're applying for. By carefully taking note of the requirements and responsibilities outlined in the job description, you can gain a comprehensive understanding of what employers are looking for and tailor your cover letter accordingly.

Below you’ll find a cover letter example of what an excellent pharmacist cover letter looks like, but first thing’s first – let’s get into writing an effective cover letter header!

Adaptable cover letter example

Dear Mr. Miller,

Being a pharmacist requires being helpful, flexible and responsible. With over seven years of pharmacist experience, I have enjoyed helping patients and medical staff care for the community. The pharmaceutical industry is essential -- as pharmacists, we are in charge of administering medicines that protect and save lives. It would be a privilege to join the Greymouth Central Pharmacy team.

After serving as a pharmacist in Rotorua and Christchurch, I relocated to Greymouth to be closer to my family. Greymouth has a lot to offer and it is essential that members of our Greymouth community have medical professionals that they can trust. As a pharmacist, I have advised hundreds of patients on safety and ensured they have access to the resources they require. In addition to this, I have also ensured that medication is dispensed responsibly to reduce the likelihood of drug misuse or abuse. As a pharmacist, ensuring patient care and safety is my number one priority.

I received my Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) from The University of Otago. During my time at The University of Otago, I completed three internships. My first internship was with Mack McCarthy, one of the leading telehealth providers in New Zealand, the Otago Pharmacist Institute, where I learned about patient care in the pharmacology industry, and the Otago Medical Centre. During all three internships, I discovered my passion for patient care and safety.

Growing up in Greymouth and my passion for pharmacology motivates me to offer my skills, insights and experiences at the Greymouth Central Pharmacy. I have attached my contact details and I hope to talk with you soon. Pharmacy care is community care, and it would be my pleasure to care for my community as a pharmacist at the Greymouth Central Pharmacy.

Best wishes,

Samantha Kaur

Cover letter header

Your cover letter header is important as it lets employers know how to get in touch with you. As you'll be applying for pharmacist positions, it's important that your header has a clean, well-structured and professional aesthetic. A well-designed, organised header not only enables easy access to your contact information, but also reflects your attention to detail, competence, and commitment to professionalism. That’s why we’ve got a wide range of cover letter templates and headers for you to choose from, so you can put your best foot forward and make a positive first impression with employers. Your cover letter header should contain contact information such as your email address, phone number and any links to professional networking sites or portfolios.

Cover letter greeting

As a pharmacist, it's important to choose an appropriate greeting.  An appropriate greeting sets a positive, professional and welcoming tone for the rest of your cover letter. Where possible, your greeting should include the names of your hiring managers to add a tailored effect, for example, “Dear Mr. Goff,” or “Dear Ms. Kingi.” Including the names of employers also shows that you've invested time in researching and personalising your application. Moreover, by addressing the specific individuals involved, you demonstrate a genuine interest in the company. This attentiveness can make your cover letter stand out and leave a positive impression on the team reviewing your application.

Cover letter introduction

Your cover letter introduction sets the stage for your professional image – so it’s important that your introduction grabs the attention of hiring managers. The opening section should provide a brief overview of your interest in the position and highlight your relevant skills and experience. In the introduction of your pharmacist cover letter, you should convey your enthusiasm for the role and showcase your qualifications in a compelling manner. Begin by expressing your excitement about applying for the pharmacist position at the organisation. Additionally, you might also like to touch upon your passion for pharmacy and your commitment to providing exceptional patient care. Highlight any specialised areas of pharmacy that you have experience in, such as retail or clinical settings. This helps the hiring manager understand the breadth of your knowledge and the value you can bring to their organisation. You don’t have to go into too much detail in your introduction – in fact, you’ll want to elaborate and expand in your body paragraphs; the next section of your cover letter.

Cover letter body paragraphs

While your introduction sets the scene for potential employers reviewing your application, your body paragraphs are where you seal the deal. In two to three paragraphs, you’ll want to highlight why you’re the ideal candidate for the role. You can mention any specific skills or expertise you possess that are relevant to the role of a pharmacist. Your body paragraphs are important and should highlight your professional value to employers. To begin, the first body paragraph can focus on your educational background and any relevant certifications you hold. You can highlight any skills and knowledge you have gained through your pharmacy degree and any specialised training you have received. Mention any honors or awards you have received during your academic journey to further emphasise your dedication to excellence.

In the next body paragraphs, you can expand on your professional experience. Provide specific examples of your accomplishments and responsibilities in previous pharmacy roles, if applicable. Highlight any experience you have in counseling patients, collaborating with healthcare teams, and working with insurance providers to ensure efficient and cost-effective care.

It is also crucial to mention any software or systems you are proficient in, such as electronic health records (EHR) or pharmacy management software. Demonstrating your technological aptitude will show that you can adapt to new technologies and streamline workflow processes. Moreover, mention any additional skills that set you apart as a pharmacist. You might like to emphasise your attention to detail, your strong communication abilities, and ability to work well under pressure. Share examples of how you have effectively resolved challenges or conflicts in previous roles, illustrating your problem-solving skills.

Cover letter conclusion

To wrap up your cover letter effectively, conclude with a call-to-action statement. Call-to-action statements encourage the employer to take the next step, such as inviting you for an interview or discussing the job opportunity further. For example, “I would love to discuss this opportunity with you further – are you available next Friday?” This shows you’re eager to connect with employers and leaves the door open for further communication. Keep the tone of this statement confident and professional.

Remember, the conclusion of your cover letter is your last chance to make a strong impression. By summarising key points, displaying enthusiasm, and using a compelling call-to-action, you increase your chances of capturing the employer's attention and moving forward in the application process.

Finally, end your cover letter with an appropriate farewell, such as “warm regards,” “best wishes,” or “ngā mihi.” These phrases help convey a positive and respectful tone, leaving a lasting impression on the recipient of your cover letter. Just make sure to select the farewell that suits the tone and formality of your application.
